(A second horse, also emaciated, was found in the same small pasture near Lake Jesup. That animal, a 15-year-old female, was hauled away by county authorities.
"You could see every rib," said Alan Harris, a county spokesman.
Soccer Olympian Michelle Akers, 41, who lives near Chuluota and has four horses, plans to adopt the animal, she said Friday evening. It was to be delivered to her 10-acre place today. "The fact that someone could treat a living being like this is so mind-boggling and upsetting," Akers said. "It's just the right thing to do."
Employees with Seminole County Animal Services deemed the case one of animal abuse, according to a Sheriff's Office report.
Lewis, who lives in a house next to the pasture, called authorities Thursday, saying the horse in the hole was about to be buried alive, she said.
Before that, though, the horse's owner and a construction worker spent a good bit of time trying to get the horse on its feet, she said. When that didn't work, the owner directed the worker to dig the hole with a piece of construction equipment.
"The horse was down. The horse was emaciated. There was no way the horse was going to survive," Lewis said.
Still, she said, the owner was wrong to put it in the hole while it was still alive. "I was very upset about it," she said.
The horses' owner could not be reached for comment.
The Sheriff's Office turned the matter over to the State Attorney's Office to determine whether he should face animal neglect charges.
Deputies left two other animals in better health with the owner, Harris said.
Akers said she would fatten up the survivor, named Sue, but was not sure whether she would keep the animal long-term.
"This is my first rescue of this kind," she said. "I guess I'll take it one step at a time. . . . Knowing me, it'll be with me the rest of my life."
Just one week earlier, deputies went to another Seminole County farm, one near Chuluota, where they found a 33-year-old quarter horse badly malnourished, according to the Sheriff's Office.
County employees rescued it, giving it to a neighbor, Lori Tankel, who reported Friday that the mare, 400 pounds underweight and named Lady Luck, was eating and thriving.)
