Elk jaar wordt in Amerika een award uitgereikt voor het meest opvallende renpaard van het jaar. Het is de grootste eer die een renpaard kan ontvangen. Deze award wordt "Horse of the year" genoemd. Deze traditie ontstond al in 1887 maar werd pas officieel in 1936 toen de Daily Racing Form (DRF) verantwoordelijk werd voor de uitreiking. In 1950 kreeg de Thoroughbred Racing Associations of North America (TRA) een eigen Horse of the year award. Hierdoor zijn er twee Horse of the years awards uitgereikt in de jaren 1949, 1952, 1957, 1965, en 1970.
